Overview

Nelson City Council invites applications from distinguished governance professionals to take on the pivotal role of Independent Chairperson for its Audit, Risk and Finance Committee. This position is integral in ensuring robust governance, financial oversight, and risk management within local government, contributing meaningfully to responsible public resource management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and chair meetings of the Audit, Risk and Finance Committee, fostering accountability and transparency.
  • Oversee and provide direction on financial performance and reporting.
  • Monitor operational, strategic, and emergent risks affecting the organisation.
  • Supervise both internal and external audit activities and help guide subsequent recommendations.
  • Evaluate governance structures, risk management, and internal control effectiveness.
  • Support prudent financial stewardship, including treasury and investment functions.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with legislative and regulatory standards.
  • Advocate for best practices in governance across the council organisation.

Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrated extensive experience in governance roles at board, committee, or executive levels.
  • Strong understanding of financial literacy, reporting, and assurance frameworks.
  • Proven expertise in managing risk and maintaining internal controls.
  • Experienced collaborator with auditors and assurance service providers.
  • Outstanding leadership capabilities alongside effective facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Sound analytical skills paired with independent decision-making ability.
  • Knowledgeable about local government operations and public sector accountability principles.
  • Skilled at building cooperative relationships while preserving independence of thought.
  • Experience spanning both private and public sectors is advantageous.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Membership or qualification such as Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified Practising Accountant (CPA), or financial equivalent.
  • Affiliation with governance institutions such as the Institute of Directors.
  • Prior experience chairing audit and risk committees.
  • Senior leadership background within local government, public sector, or regulated industries.
  • Professional credentials in areas like risk management, audit, law, governance, or finance.
