Role overview

The HSE South West region is responsible for delivering public health and social care services across Cork and Kerry, with hospital and community services aligned locally to improve access, accountability, and decision-making. Mallow General Hospital is a Model 2 hospital with 95 inpatient beds and a range of inpatient, outpatient, and day patient services.

The hospital’s Catering Department serves meals to 95 patients as well as staff and visitors through a 60-seat canteen. The team works to meet the National Food, Nutrition and Hydration Policy for Adult Patients 2018 and all relevant food safety legislation.

Purpose of the role

This position supports the day-to-day preparation, cooking, and serving of meals for patients, staff, and visitors at Mallow General Hospital.

HSE South West covers the South/South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, along with associated acute hospitals, primary care, community services, social care services, health and social care professionals, voluntary sector services, and the Department of Population and Public Health.

Mallow General Hospital provides services in general medicine, cardiology, respiratory, gerontology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, ENT, and urology. The hospital also supports inpatient care through a Medical Assessment Unit and High Dependency Unit, and offers elective day surgery, endoscopy, an Injuries Unit, outpatients, physiotherapy, and radiology services including CT and ultrasound.

Responsibilities

• Support the preparation of food for patients, staff, and visitors.
• Assist with cooking duties as part of the daily catering workflow.
• Help with serving meals in the hospital catering service.
• Contribute to meeting nutrition, hydration, and food safety standards set for the department.
