Phlebotomist, Staff Grade, Cork University Hospital

Overview

This role sits within the phlebotomy service at Cork University Hospital and supports a broad hospital-based blood collection function. The service covers the Seahorse paediatric day care unit, the Emergency Department, and all adult and paediatric wards. It also extends to the Out Patient Department in St Catherine’s, which is off campus, as well as the Glandore Oncology Unit and the Diabetic and Endocrine Clinic in the Cedar Building, also located off site.

Role purpose

The main objective of the post is to obtain venous blood specimens from patients across the hospital and outpatient clinics. The aim is to deliver a phlebotomy service that aligns with the needs of both inpatients and outpatients while following hospital guidelines, policies, and procedures.

Working arrangement

The phlebotomist may work independently on the wards or collaborate with colleagues in the outpatient department as part of a team.

Service and regional context

Health Regions were agreed by the Government in July 2019 and are scheduled to be operational from 2024. They are intended to support population-focused planning, resourcing, and delivery of health and social care services, with stronger accountability, better governance in finance and performance, and decision-making closer to frontline care.

These regions are designed to help services become more integrated, locally planned and delivered, easier to access and navigate, and available closer to home. They are geographically defined and align community and hospital services within set areas, while HSE retains a strong but leaner central structure and expands more service delivery locally.

HSE South West is responsible for public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry, covering both hospital and community healthcare services in the region. This includes the South/South West Hospital Group, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, and the Department of Population and Public Health. Services within the region include acute hospitals, primary care, community services, social care services, health and social care professionals, and voluntary sector services.

South/South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare became part of HSE South West on 3 March 2025, and the transition to the new structures will continue throughout 2026.
