Catchment Management Lead - Hauraki & Coromandel

About the Role

This senior leadership position based in Paeroa offers an opportunity to lead complex catchment management initiatives over the Coromandel, Waihou, and Piako River catchments. The role involves oversight of a team focused on integrated catchment management including restoration, soil conservation, biodiversity enhancements, and river improvements.

Key responsibilities include planning and governing unit activities such as budgeting, forecasting, and project governance. You will develop and execute catchment restoration plans, Environmental Programme Agreements (EPAs), and projects targeting high-value natural habitats. Building and sustaining strong partnerships with iwi, landowners, community groups, and other stakeholders to promote co-management and community-driven restoration is essential. You will ensure that the work aligns with the Coromandel, Waihou–Piako Zone Plan and broader regional programmes.

The workload balances approximately 60% leadership responsibilities with 40% senior technical contributions, including active fieldwork and project oversight outdoors.

About You

• Deep understanding of integrated catchment management and restoration ecology.
• Proven leadership skills with the ability to nurture a positive and values-oriented team culture.
• Strong background in planning and implementing projects involving soil conservation, erosion control, biodiversity, and catchment restoration.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, especially experience cooperating with iwi in co-management frameworks.
• Robust program and project management expertise, including budgeting, financial forecasting, and contract supervision.
• High level of political awareness and professionalism to handle sensitive and high-profile environmental issues.
• Comfortable working both in office environments and challenging outdoor terrain.

Qualifications and Experience

• A degree in natural resource management, environmental science, ecology, or a related field (postgraduate qualifications preferred).
• At least six years of experience working in catchment management or similar environmental roles.
• Experience in leadership, project management, and stakeholder engagement is required.
• Possession of a current full driver’s license is mandatory.

About the Team

You will lead a committed team of catchment managers and actively contribute to the leadership culture within the Hauraki and Coromandel Catchments division. Collaboration with river and catchment staff and coordination with regional catchment and flood protection teams is a vital part of the role.
