Job description
Role overview
Oranga Tamariki is looking for casual Tamariki and Rangatahi Support Workers to join the Resource Worker pool in Tokoroa. This is an as-needed position for short or block assignments, supporting communities across the local area. The work is centred on helping tamariki and rangatahi feel safe, heard, and supported alongside their whānau.
The hourly rate for this role is $26.00.
About the work
This position is suited to people who are steady, confident, and committed to making a positive impact in the lives of children and young people. You may deal with challenging situations, so a calm approach, patience, and an understanding of tamariki and rangatahi needs are essential.
Day-to-day tasks will depend on operational needs and may include transport, supervision, and support for children and young people in different settings.
Key duties
- Drive tamariki and rangatahi to school, appointments, activities, and respite arrangements.
- Provide care for tamariki and rangatahi when they are away from their whānau.
- Work outside standard business hours when needed, including weekends.
- Support, guide, and accompany tamariki and rangatahi through their time with the service.
- Assist Social Workers where required.
- Supervise contact visits between tamariki and rangatahi and their parents, whānau, or siblings at different venues, and complete observation notes for Social Workers.
- Be prepared for occasional overnight travel.
What you need to bring
- Availability to work flexible hours across weekdays and weekends, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills, patience, empathy, and the ability to understand what may be behind challenging behaviour.
- Background working with tamariki and rangatahi who may have complex needs such as behavioural challenges, trauma, ADHD, autism, or FASD.
- Discretion and the ability to build trust with tamariki, rangatahi, whānau, and colleagues.
- Tolerance, understanding, and a consistent, dependable approach.
- Strong spoken and written communication skills, including the ability to tailor communication to the audience and produce clear, accurate reports and incident records.
- Professional conduct that sets a positive example and helps build trust and confidence in others.
- Legal right to work in New Zealand and a full, current, clean driver licence.
- An appreciation of cultural considerations, especially Tikanga Māori and Pacific Island cultures.
What is offered
You will be joining a small, energetic, and supportive team. Training and professional development are provided to help you grow in the role. The workplace values diversity, inclusion, and respect.
