About the Role
The University of Manitoba seeks a dedicated Caretaker responsible for routine daily cleaning and maintenance of assigned residence areas. Reporting to the Area Supervisor, this role entails managing cleaning supplies, maintaining lighting systems, setting up and dismantling facilities for events, furniture movement, and grounds upkeep to ensure a safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for staff, students, and visitors.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain cleanliness in student lounges, classrooms, offices, labs, entryways, halls, and stairwells.
- Operate specialized equipment for floor maintenance, including polishers and vacuum cleaners.
- Perform carpet and furniture cleaning via vacuuming and shampooing.
- Empty waste and recyclable containers, transporting materials to designated collection points.
- Clean and sanitize washrooms, including sinks, toilets, urinals, and related fixtures daily.
- Maintain supplies such as towels, soap, and tissue in washrooms.
- Clean whiteboards, chalkboards, windows, mirrors, glass doors, and interior walls as needed.
- Replace burnt-out light bulbs, stock lighting supplies, and report any malfunctions.
- Turn off unoccupied area lighting and secure building entrances through locking/unlocking procedures.
- Conduct floor stripping and refinishing and maintain grounds by clearing snow, ice, and landscaping tasks.
- Support event setups involving tables, chairs, and dividers, liaising with catering and conference organizers.
- Carry out minor repairs and maintain caretaking equipment routinely.
- Record work hours on timesheets and log maintenance orders.
- Inspect fire extinguishers and doors regularly for safety compliance.
- Perform thorough seasonal cleaning of residence rooms and manage linen setup for conference guests.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Completion of High School Diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent.
- At least one year of hands-on experience in comparable cleaning or maintenance roles.
- Proficient knowledge of cleaning techniques and grounds maintenance equipment including floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, carpet extractors, power scrubbers, lawnmowers, weed eaters, and snow blowers.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions attentively.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff, students, event organizers, and the general public.
- Capable of working both independently and collaboratively with minimal oversight.
- Strong organizational abilities and adherence to safety protocols established by the Physical Plant Department.
- Willingness to work outdoors throughout all seasons and across various shifts including days, nights, weekends, and afternoons.
- Physical capability to carry out demanding tasks including lifting 50-80 lbs, bending, stretching, climbing ladders, and working in confined or elevated spaces.
- Successful completion of job-related safety training such as WHMIS and passing fitness assessments.
- Regular attendance and punctuality are mandatory.
- Potential requirement to provide clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Persons Registry checks.
