Role overview
Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is hiring permanent full-time Care and Protection Social Workers for its Waipukurau/Dannevirke sites. The salary range for this position starts at $81,206 and goes up to $97,557, with the final figure based on experience.
This role is focused on improving outcomes for children, young people and their families by working in a supportive team environment that is committed to helping tamariki and rangatahi be safe, strong and able to thrive.
What the role involves
- Listen to the voices of tamariki and rangatahi and help them and their whānau make meaningful positive change.
- Work confidently with people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds.
- Carry out thorough assessments for tamariki, rangatahi and whānau.
- Lead and facilitate hui with a strong focus on building whānau capability to care for their tamariki and rangatahi.
- Contribute to planning and delivering interventions that support tamariki and rangatahi to remain with their whānau where possible.
- Work in partnership with community groups, non-government organisations and state sector agencies.
- Advocate for tamariki and rangatahi so they receive the support and resources they need to reach their potential.
Ideal background
The preferred applicant will be an experienced social worker who has worked in Aotearoa in a similar NGO setting and/or someone with previous experience working within Oranga Tamariki.
Requirements
- Full registration with the Social Work Registration Board in New Zealand, along with a current practising certificate.
- A social work qualification recognised by the SWRB.
- A full, clean New Zealand driver licence.
- Recent and relevant experience in an Oranga Tamariki social worker role.
- A strong sense of empathy, patience and the ability to look beyond immediate challenges.
- Experience in child protection, preferably within New Zealand.
- Ability to assess situations and prepare social work plans and other related plans, including financial plans.
- Sound judgement and well-developed organisational skills.
- Capability to manage risk and make difficult decisions when required.
