Job description

Job purpose

This role is responsible for operating scheduled flights in line with the Airline Operations Manual and all applicable civil aviation regulations. The captain must uphold the highest standards of safety, security, and operational efficiency while supporting the flight and cabin crew, managing emergencies and unexpected situations, and ensuring smooth performance that reflects positively on the airline.

Key responsibilities

  • Operate the assigned aircraft between destinations according to the approved schedule and flight plan, taking full command of the aircraft and prioritising safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort in that order.
  • Ensure every flight is performed in accordance with the airline’s manuals and regulatory requirements, maintaining safe and orderly operation at all times.
  • Arrive on time and ensure proper grooming, personal fitness, and legal readiness of self and the crew for each duty period.
  • Conduct pre-flight briefings so all flight crew understand the flight plan, duties, and relevant operational details before departure and before each required action.
  • Coordinate with the First Officer, Second Officer, and Dispatch team before each flight to confirm aircraft status, route considerations, weather, fuel, load distribution, role assignments, and other operational inputs.
  • Manage fuel-efficient flight execution while staying within all safety constraints defined in the operations manual.
  • Verify that required safety, security, fuel, and transit checks are completed before, during, and after each flight, and guide crew response to any irregularity or escalation.
  • Work with maintenance engineers, MCC, and MROs to confirm aircraft technical status, address defects, and apply corrective action when required.
  • Ensure all mandatory documents and technical records are completed accurately and carried in line with airline and aviation authority requirements, including logbooks, journey records, boarding sheets, and reports.
  • Make sure the Airline Operations Manual is distributed, maintained, updated, understood, and followed by the flight crew.
  • Stay current on legal and regulatory requirements issued by aviation authorities, Airbus, and other relevant bodies.
  • Take on additional ground assignments such as Safety Officer or Security Officer when directed and when aligned with the operations manual.

Qualifications and requirements

  • An active ATPL licence is mandatory.
  • The candidate must successfully clear the pilot technical and psychometric assessments required by the airline and the relevant civil aviation authority.
  • Medical fitness clearance for pilots is required under airline and authority standards.
  • Training in safety and emergency response is essential; a formal qualification in this area is an advantage.
  • Basic training in airport operations, security procedures, and regulations is preferred.
  • Crew Resource Management training is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of IATA security principles and standards is an advantage.
  • Strong understanding of aircraft systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office are required.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills are needed, including technical report writing and presentations.
  • Very good command of English is required; knowledge of local languages in the country of employment is an advantage.
  • A minimum of 4,000 flying hours is required, with A320 experience preferred.
  • Experience in a low-cost airline environment is highly desirable.
  • Sound industry knowledge of aircraft systems and operating procedures is expected.
  • Ability to take on delegated safety or security duties in line with airline and regulatory requirements is required.
  • Exposure to QA, safety, security, and audit processes connected to flight operations is preferred.
  • Ability to implement policies, procedures, and manuals to approved standards is required.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-changing environment with demanding schedules and ad-hoc operational situations.
  • Calm, self-assured, and focused behaviour is essential, especially when handling emergencies or threats.
  • Strong analytical ability, with a track record of identifying issues and recommending cost-effective solutions, is required.
  • A cost-conscious mindset, along with effective problem-solving and decision-making skills, is needed.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy is important.
  • Must be able to use technical expertise and interpersonal skills to support company objectives.
  • Ability to contribute to business strategy and deliver against KPIs is expected.

Additional information

This position also includes the possibility of being assigned ground-based duties such as Safety Officer or Security Officer, depending on operational requirements and management direction.
