About the Role

The Irish Cancer Society invites applications for the position of Cancer Nurse based at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH), operating part-time (21 hours per week) from Monday to Wednesday, 9am to 5pm. This permanent role offers a pro rata salary of €33,960 based on a full-time equivalent of €56,600. Reporting to the Team Lead – Daffodil Centres within the Services Department, the Cancer Nurse will manage the local Daffodil Centre, delivering support and specialist care to those affected by cancer.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the operation and continuous development of the Letterkenny Daffodil Centre, promoting awareness both in hospital settings and the local community.
  • Provide expert cancer-related information, education, and emotional support to patients, carers, healthcare professionals, and the public through various communication channels.
  • Develop, update, and maintain comprehensive cancer information resources and deliver Irish Cancer Society patient education programmes locally and online.
  • Manage and mentor volunteers working in the centre to ensure effective service delivery and maintain competence.
  • Conduct needs assessments and refer enquirers to appropriate services within the Society or external healthcare providers.
  • Collaborate with hospital multidisciplinary teams, internal Society departments, and other stakeholders to enhance cancer care and awareness.
  • Represent the Society in presentations, exhibitions, media relations, and broader community engagements to promote services and cancer awareness.
  • Maintain up-to-date professional knowledge, attend relevant training and supervision sessions, and comply with governance standards including confidentiality and health and safety.
  • Provide cover in other Daffodil Centres and participate in Society events outside normal hours as required.

Candidate Profile

  • Registered General Nurse on the active register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) with a post-registration qualification in cancer nursing at diploma level or higher.
  • Minimum three years of recent experience in cancer nursing including clinical, leadership, and organisational expertise.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong relationships with patients, colleagues, volunteers, and health professionals.
  • Effective communication skills across multiple platforms and formats, adaptable to diverse audiences.
  • Strong leadership qualities with experience in managing teams and developing services.
  • Organised and able to manage multiple tasks while maintaining high standards.
  • Comfortable using technology and digital tools for service delivery and program management, proficient with Microsoft applications.
  • Flexible and willing to travel occasionally to provide broader support within the Society’s services.

Work Environment and Governance

The role is based full-time onsite at Letterkenny University Hospital, with adherence to hospital policies on health and safety, infection control, dress code, and risk management.
