Job description
Role overview
The Business Development Officer will drive the company’s business growth activities inside Botswana, with a focus on building and managing relationships across government, regulatory, banking, and local partner networks. This is a highly visible, client-facing position that requires confidence, strong persuasion skills, and the ability to represent the organisation credibly at senior levels. Performance in this role depends not only on sector knowledge, but also on personal stature, trustworthiness, and professional presence.
What you will do
- Spot, pursue, and convert new business opportunities that support the company’s exploration and mining plans in Botswana.
- Establish and nurture productive relationships with government departments, mining and regulatory bodies, and financial institutions.
- Attend meetings, negotiations, and formal engagements on behalf of the company, presenting its position clearly and confidently.
- Assist with licensing, approvals, and other regulatory steps by working with the appropriate authorities and keeping track of requirements.
- Identify possible local collaborators, vendors, and stakeholders, then help shape arrangements that benefit all parties.
- Track developments in the Botswana mining industry, policy changes, and competitor movements, and share findings with senior leadership.
- Work closely with regional and head-office teams so local activities stay aligned with wider business goals.
- Draft proposals, briefing notes, and reports that inform business development decisions.
Background and experience
- 3 to 5 years of experience in business development, ideally gained in the mining sector in Botswana.
- Prior exposure to working with government offices, regulators, and/or banking and financial organisations.
- Solid knowledge of Botswana’s commercial, regulatory, and business landscape; mining sector knowledge is a strong plus.
- A bachelor’s degree in business, geology, mining, economics, law, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Strong command of written and spoken English; Setswana fluency is an added advantage.
- Prepared to travel within Botswana and, from time to time, across the region.
Personal attributes
- A confident, engaging, and charismatic personality with the ability to connect quickly and represent the company persuasively at senior level.
- Well-developed interpersonal and negotiation abilities, with a talent for building trust and influencing others.
- Independent, proactive, and comfortable working with limited supervision in a lean and expanding organisation.
- High ethical standards and good judgement when interacting with government and financial stakeholders.
- Strong cultural awareness and established connections within the local business community.
What the company offers
- A key opportunity to help establish the Botswana presence of an expanding international mining business.
- Direct access to senior leadership and a chance to influence local strategy.
- Competitive remuneration.
Location
The role is based in Gaborone, Botswana.
