Job description

Role Overview

The Benthic Research Technician will play an essential role in analyzing and managing long-term coral reef monitoring data. This position involves working with Research Scientists to perform detailed computer-based analyses of imagery collected from the field, assessing benthic community structures and supporting ecological studies on coral community dynamics such as change, resilience, recovery, and connectivity. The role also includes contributing to scientific reports and peer-reviewed articles.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities extend to overseeing the management and quality control of ecological datasets to ensure they are accurately processed, organized, and archived following established protocols. Laboratory duties include supporting molecular workflows like sample processing, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, amplicon purification, and normalization of sequencing libraries.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess a master's degree or higher in Marine Biology, Ecology, or a closely related field. Expertise in identifying benthic invertebrates through video and still imagery, especially the ability to classify Scleractinia corals at least to the genus level, with species-level identification being an advantage, is essential. Practical experience on tropical reefs and proficiency in data analysis, visualization, spatial mapping, and report preparation are required. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and molecular lab methodologies including DNA extraction and PCR is highly valued.

Employment Conditions & Benefits

This is a full-time, one-year temporary (labour hire) position located in Perth, Western Australia. The role offers a competitive salary aligned with AIMS AOF Level 3 Enhanced ($79,503 to $99,105 annually) plus 15.4% superannuation. Employees enjoy a 9-day fortnight, which provides a long weekend biweekly, with flexible working arrangements including hybrid options where feasible. Additional benefits include generous leave entitlements and access to an Employee Assistance Program.
