Job description

About the Role

We seek a motivated and proficient Mechanical Craftsperson to join our Estates team, contributing directly to services that support patient care. The successful candidate must have completed qualifying training such as a City & Guilds Apprenticeship, B-TEC ONC, NVQ Level 2 or higher, or possess equivalent accredited mechanical or plumbing engineering experience. This will enable independent work, safe practice, and prioritization of requests.

Ongoing site-specific training is offered to broaden skills, backed by Estates management support. The role involves emergency overtime work when needed and the capability to operate unsupervised.

Working Hours and On-Call

The position entails 37.5 working hours per week from Monday to Thursday (8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with a 1-hour lunch break), and Friday (8:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a 30-minute lunch). Participation in the mechanical on-call rota is mandatory, currently scheduled one week in every nine, with responsibilities including making onsite decisions to maintain safety for patients and staff.

Key Duties

  • Troubleshoot and repair faults on sophisticated mechanical services, engineering plant, and equipment, proactively sharing expertise with colleagues.
  • Monitor temperatures using handheld data devices; diagnose and fix thermostatic mixing valves, tanks, and calorifiers to comply with Legionella control standards.
  • Fabricate, assemble, erect, and install new plumbing installations as needed.
  • Construct or repair iron pipework of all sizes, using screwing or welding techniques.
  • Operate and maintain steam raising plants, including associated distribution and condensate return systems.
  • Perform installation, repairs, and planned preventative maintenance on heating systems, compressors, motors, pumps, ventilation systems, heat recovery units, and controls.
  • Conduct statutory inspections and tests on mechanical services and plant equipment with complete documentation.
  • Carry out electrical isolations under direction and electrical competency assessments.
  • Perform non-complex fault diagnostics in other trades.
  • Repair lifts and undertake emergency evacuation in line with health and safety procedures.
  • Install heavy engineering plant using lifting equipment safely within Trust policies.
