Job description
Role overview
Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust is hiring a full-time Occupational Therapy Assistant for Mary Seacole House Ward 2, a female acute inpatient ward in Birmingham. This role supports the delivery of therapeutic activity within a mental health setting and works closely with occupational therapists, nursing staff, and the ward manager.
What you will do
You will help run both group sessions and one-to-one interventions, using meaningful activity to support patients’ health, wellbeing, and day-to-day functioning as part of their wider multidisciplinary care plan. The post involves contributing to therapeutic programmes under delegation from qualified professionals and helping service users engage in activities that support recovery and timely discharge.
The work will include activity-based support on the ward as well as with individuals using community resources where appropriate. Hours are variable, and the role requires flexibility to meet the needs of service users and the service.
Working approach
You will be part of a collaborative ward team, supporting treatment and care plans under the supervision of a qualified occupational therapist and in partnership with nursing colleagues. The role requires a dynamic approach, creativity, the ability to generate new ideas, and the confidence to work independently as well as within a team.
You will also be expected to show strong communication, professional conduct, and the ability to work flexibly across the service while respecting and reflecting the Trust Values.
Training and development
The Trust offers training and development opportunities linked to your personal development plan, access to a wider network of occupational therapists and other allied health professionals in acute services and across the organisation, and the chance to help shape future services.
About the Trust
The Trust employs around 4,000 clinical and support staff and provides mental health services across Birmingham and Solihull, along with specialist services nationally. It also delivers medical, nursing, and psychology training and has an international reputation for research and innovation. The local population is culturally diverse and, in some areas, faces significant deprivation, creating strong demand for accessible, high-quality care.
