Role Overview

This role is for a Baker working in a remote camp environment in Nunavut. The main objective is to prepare and bake high-quality products that meet Dexterra’s standards and client expectations.

The position is safety-sensitive and employment is conditional on passing drug and alcohol testing as well as a fitness-to-work assessment.

Camp and Remote Living Arrangements

  • Meals and accommodation are provided.
  • Transportation is arranged to and from Edmonton Airport.
  • Each worker receives a private room with cable television.
  • Wi-Fi access is available.
  • Laundry facilities and detergents are provided.
  • There is access to a gym and shared common spaces.

Key Duties

  • Oversee night-shift staff and support them through coaching and on-the-job training.
  • Look for ways to improve the overall operation when needed.
  • Prepare and bake items from scratch.
  • Keep pastry displays stocked with fresh products at all times.
  • Develop and follow menus to maintain consistent quality in baked goods and desserts.
  • Maintain high food quality standards while meeting client needs, including special dietary requirements.
  • Follow all food hygiene rules in line with the Food Safety Act.
  • Clean, wash, and sanitize equipment as well as all work areas.

Working Conditions

  • This is a project-based role with the main assignment in Nunavut, with remote work flexibility when not on site.
  • Applicants must be comfortable working extended shifts and rotational schedules, such as 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off.
  • The job requires the ability to work in severe northern conditions, including extreme cold, wind, and periods with little or no daylight.
  • It involves long stretches away from home and limited outside contact.
  • The role follows a fly-in/fly-out model, with shared accommodation and meals provided while on site.
  • Weather may cause travel delays, and time away from home can be extended.
  • All company and client health, safety, and operational requirements must be followed.

Qualifications

  • FoodSafe Level I certification is the minimum requirement; SafeCheck advanced food safety training or HACCP certification is considered an advantage.
  • At least 3 years of baking experience in a comparable hotel, institutional, or similar environment is required.
  • Experience producing baked goods for large groups is needed.
  • Previous supervisory experience is required.
  • Applicants must be able to pass a drug and alcohol check along with a health assessment.
  • A clear criminal background check is required.
  • Ability to remain on your feet for long periods and lift up to 35 pounds is necessary.
  • Successful candidates must score 80% or higher on the mandatory WHMIS test.

Schedule and Pay

The work schedule is rotational: 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off. The site is a remote camp in Nunavut. Shifts may include nights, weekdays, weekends, and public holidays. Pay is hourly, with a starting rate of $21.00 per hour.
