Job description
About Rocket Lab
Rocket Lab is a comprehensive space enterprise that provides rapid launch services, spacecraft design and production, satellite parts, and more — with a vision to broaden space accessibility. Our rockets and satellites fuel some of the world’s most vital missions, from scientific discovery and Earth monitoring to combating climate change, enhancing national security, and pioneering advanced technology demonstrations.
Our Electron rocket ranks as the second most frequently launched US rocket yearly, having deployed over 230 satellites. Meanwhile, our Space Systems division develops satellites and components supporting NASA’s lunar and Mars projects, plus parts for the James Webb Space Telescope. We are now focused on Neutron, a medium-lift, reusable rocket for larger satellite constellations.
Neutron Avionics Hardware Role
The Neutron team is responsible for developing this new large rocket including launch and test infrastructure. As part of the Avionics Hardware group, you will lead development of mission-critical avionics subsystems from concept through production for the Neutron launch vehicle.
- Take ownership of avionics components and subsystems as primary technical lead in your domain.
- Lead full lifecycle design: requirements gathering, prototyping, debugging, schematic capture, PCB layout, assembly, integration, testing, and production.
- Design and validate digital, power, and analog sensing circuits suitable for aerospace environments.
- Develop and run comprehensive test plans for avionics modules including computing and high-voltage systems.
- Create automation tools in Python and C/C++ to interface with test units, automated equipment, and ERP systems.
- Perform critical safety and reliability analyses such as FMECA, derating, root cause failure investigations, and risk mitigation planning.
- Collaborate across teams to achieve program objectives.
- Review and approve engineering deliverables including schematics, PCB designs, and test documentation.
- Document test methods, maintenance and calibration procedures, and provide training and support for new systems.
Candidate Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- At least one year experience in electronics hardware development from concept through full production.
- Strong knowledge of instrumentation, interfaces, and sensors (power supplies, serial devices, switch topologies, accelerometers, thermocouples, RTDs, 4-20mA sensors).
- Proficient with laboratory test instruments: power supplies, oscilloscopes, electronic loads, DMMs, function generators, and process calibrators.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Self-motivated with ownership mindset driving projects to completion independently.
- Strong problem-solving skills with ability to improve cost, quality, reliability, and delivery.
- Available and willing to travel domestically and internationally.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with environmental testing including vibration, shock, thermal, EMI/EMC, and thermal vacuum (TVAC).
- Familiarity with Altium Designer for PCB design.
- Skill in programming languages including Python, C, and C++.
