Role Overview

Keith Andrews in Manukau is hiring an Assistant Service Manager to support the running of a busy commercial vehicle workshop. This is a leadership-focused opportunity for an experienced Heavy Diesel Technician who is ready to step up and influence team performance, customer satisfaction, and workshop results.

Key Duties

  • Work with the Service Manager to lead the workshop on a day-to-day basis.
  • Support and guide the Foreman team so productivity and efficiency stay high.
  • Manage workshop scheduling, labour distribution, and workflow planning.
  • Track job progress and keep Service Advisors updated.
  • Prepare customer estimates and quotations.
  • Check that job cards are complete and accurate for invoicing and warranty processing.
  • Look into rework issues, identify the underlying causes, and help put improvements in place.
  • Monitor productivity, efficiency, and overall workshop performance.
  • Make sure workshop tools, equipment, and presentation standards are maintained.
  • Help develop staff through coaching and training.
  • Build strong customer relationships and ensure a high level of service.
  • Step into the Service Manager role when needed.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who enjoys driving team culture and setting a positive example. You should be practical, organised, and comfortable balancing people leadership with workshop operations.

This role suits someone with strong technical foundations in heavy diesel mechanics, along with the confidence to manage people, communicate clearly, and keep service delivery on track.

Requirements

  • Heavy Diesel Mechanical qualification.
  • Current New Zealand Class 4 driver licence, with a clean record preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a Heavy Automotive Technician, or established workshop leadership experience.
  • Proven leadership and people management ability.
  • Strong communication skills and a customer-first mindset.
  • Practical problem-solving skills.
  • Good planning, coordination, and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and ongoing improvement.
