Job description
About the Role
The Heritage Policy and Research (HPR) Division of the National Heritage Board leads efforts in researching and documenting Singapore's archaeology, built heritage, and intangible cultural heritage. The division also assesses heritage buildings, sites, and structures, collaborating closely with government planning bodies to ensure heritage aspects are integrated into planning processes. Engagement with non-government organizations and heritage interest groups is also facilitated, alongside the development of policies aimed at preserving Singapore’s archaeological heritage and fostering national historical awareness.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate research projects related to archaeology and built heritage within Singapore, including in-house studies and outsourced research.
- Review and develop policies, legislations, and guidelines concerning archaeological practices in Singapore.
- Collaborate with government agencies on development planning for sites with archaeological significance.
- Create and execute initiatives and programs that increase public interest and appreciation of Singapore’s archaeology and pre-colonial history.
- Partner with government bodies, research organizations, and academic institutions to plan and implement archaeology-related efforts.
- Engage with industry professionals and stakeholders on matters pertaining to heritage.
Candidate Profile
- Educational background in archaeology, history, anthropology, geography, or a related field.
- Preferably a minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in cultural heritage, policy, or planning sectors.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Organized, efficient, highly motivated, and capable of managing multiple tasks within a team environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders and partners.
- Robust organizational and time management skills, adaptable to project demands.
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is considered a plus.
Key Competencies
- Policy and Planning: Capability to balance sector priorities, stakeholder interests, trends, and trade-offs, applying archaeology expertise to inform policy formation.
- Management and Implementation: Ability to operationalize and manage workstreams collaboratively with governmental and partner agencies to safeguard archaeological heritage.
Additional Information
Successful applicants will initially be offered a two-year contract position based in Singapore.
