Job description

About the Accounts & Finance Team

The Accounts & Finance Team is responsible for protecting the club’s financial wellbeing by making sure every transaction is properly recorded and that funds are allocated thoughtfully to support the organisation’s goals. The team is known for precision, openness, and careful financial planning, and it works closely with other departments to maintain long-term stability while supporting a strong member experience.

Role Overview

Sunderland AFC is looking for a meticulous and proactive Assistant Financial Accountant to support the finance function across a range of accounting activities. This position is central to keeping financial processes accurate, timely, and well-controlled.

Key Duties

You will be responsible for completing monthly bank reconciliations, including foreign currency accounts, and ensuring all transactions are correctly captured while discrepancies are investigated and resolved. The role also includes supporting the preparation of management accounts and assisting with month-end tasks such as prepayments, accruals, deferred income, and accrued income.

You will take ownership of daily and monthly ticketing reports, making sure they are fully reconciled and accurate. In addition, you will prepare and post journal entries to maintain reliable financial records.

Working with the Payroll Department will be part of the role, including providing ad hoc analysis for monthly salary deductions and annual P11D reporting. You will also manage debtor reports, chase overdue balances, and help ensure payments are collected on time.

Other responsibilities include processing and recording player-related bank payments such as transfer fees and agent fees in line with relevant regulatory requirements, completing monthly currency revaluations, managing invoicing for players on loan, and performing monthly balance sheet reconciliations to confirm account accuracy. You will also maintain the fixed asset register, carry out initial reviews of monthly accounts to identify adjustments, and support additional financial analysis and reporting when needed.

Candidate Profile

The successful applicant should have substantial experience handling the full month-end cycle and be comfortable preparing, reviewing, and reconciling accounts independently to support accurate and timely reporting. Strong time management, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and a high level of accuracy are all essential.

Experience using accounting software is required, with Sage 200 preferred. Familiarity with ticketing platforms such as SeatGeek would be beneficial. Prior experience in a finance or accounting position is strongly preferred, especially where month-end responsibilities were managed from start to finish. An AAT Level 3 qualification, or an equivalent credential, is desirable but not mandatory.

Additional Requirements

The ideal candidate will be self-driven, adaptable, resilient, and proactive, with a strong commitment to producing high-quality work. A Basic DBS check will be required through Sunderland AFC.
