Job description
About Gap
Gap is a long-standing American fashion brand known for optimistic style. Since the opening of its first store on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco nearly five decades ago, the company has been shaped by the people connected to it: employees and customers who respect its heritage while pushing it forward. The brand looks for people who want to contribute to something iconic and help shape what comes next.
Role overview
This position sits in a creative, energetic, and inclusive environment where the focus is on developing elevated, sustainable product through collaborations that feel relevant, fresh, and aligned with the brand. The assistant designer supports the creation of product lines, including sketches and basic product specifications, and helps develop collaboration capsules and partner collections across Adult and Kids. The role calls for curiosity about the customer, openness to calculated risk, and a strong perspective on future collaboration opportunities.
Key duties
The role involves supporting designers with sketches, CADs, and follow-through on each style from concept to development. It also includes preparing and updating presentation materials for both internal and external meetings, such as Miro boards and CAD decks, and contributing during weekly fittings alongside product development and technical design teams to help ensure styles meet high standards.
Another major part of the job is trend and market research. The assistant designer will look at global markets to identify new silhouettes, fabrics, techniques, product categories, and competitive ideas, with particular attention to collaborations and culturally relevant trends. Findings should be translated into actionable design ideas and opportunities.
The position also requires building strong working relationships across merchandising, production, technical design, Gap Inc Sourcing, and marketing so that concept development, store execution, and online presentation work smoothly together. In partnership with production and technical design, the assistant designer will help create tech packs and communicate the design intent behind fit, product direction, quality, and margin goals.
Requirements
The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design and 1 to 3 years of design experience. Experience with collaborations or licensing is considered an advantage.
The role suits someone who can thrive in a fast-moving, highly collaborative setting, manage several projects at once, and stay on top of multiple development timelines across Adult and Kids workstreams. A refined eye for taste and a solid understanding of how to interpret trends and cultural moments through the lens of both customer and brand are important.
Success in this role also depends on the ability to identify emerging opportunities early, make a strong case for promising collaboration ideas, and work effectively with cross-functional teams. Strong knowledge of silhouette, fit, fabrication, construction, color, sewing methods, and trims is needed, along with proficiency in Adobe Suite, Miro, and Microsoft Excel. Experience with Centric and CLO would be a plus. The role also requires the ability to assess complex situations using input from customer insights, trend research, cultural signals, and performance learnings.
Compensation and benefits
The annual salary range for this position is USD 57,500 to 71,900. Pay may vary depending on qualifications, experience, skill level, competencies, and work location. The company will comply with applicable minimum wage requirements if they exceed the stated range.
Benefits include a 50% merchandise discount on regular-priced items at Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, and Athleta, plus a 30% outlet discount for all employees. The company also offers a competitive paid time off plan, up to five paid volunteer hours each month, a 401(k) plan with company matching up to 4% of base pay, an employee stock purchase plan, and medical, dental, vision, and life insurance for eligible employees.
Equal opportunity statement
Gap Inc. is committed to a workplace free from harassment and discrimination. Hiring, training, promotion, and all employment decisions are made without regard to protected status. The company promotes diversity, inclusion, and belonging and has been recognized for its commitment to equality.
