Job description
Overview
This role is focused on managing and strengthening the relationship with the bancassurance partner for the VRM (Variable Range Market) vertical within the Non-Branch Banking segment. The objective is to achieve business goals through optimizing costs, meeting revenue targets, and increasing profitability. The position requires strategizing business development initiatives and motivating teams to expand and deepen the partnership, thus fostering overall business growth.
Context and Challenges
Bancassurance involves distributing insurance products through a banking partner's customer base. Since April 2017, ABSLI has partnered with HDFC Bank to offer insurance products via non-branch or alternative banking channels. With digital advances, banks prioritize alternative channels over traditional branches to reduce real estate and licensing costs. Customer segments include Private Banking, Non-Resident Indians, VRM, COP, and Prime Sales Operations, covering HNI to retail customers.
The open architecture approach allows customers to choose life insurance products from multiple insurers, promoting competitive pricing and reducing mis-selling risks under regulatory supervision by RBI and IRDAI.
Key Challenges
- Mindshare Competition: The bank also distributes insurance from HDFC Life and TATA AIA, which have strong brand loyalty. Changing the bank's sales personnel mindset, accustomed to HDFC Life’s products for 17 years, is a significant challenge.
- Product Mix: Banks typically focus on ULIP products, but promoting a profitable mix including Participatory and Non-Participatory products and term insurance is challenging.
- Adoption of Bank Processes: Navigating the bank's processes, technology, and compliance demands to ensure efficient third-party selling adds pressure on the sales team amid competition.
- Leakage Reduction: Minimizing the gap between logged policies and issued policies to prevent productivity loss and additional costs requires precise customer sourcing and documentation.
- Geographical Coverage: The bank’s extensive branch network necessitates regular workforce presence across metro, urban, semi-urban, and rural locations, which is challenging given limited resources and cost controls.
- Market Penetration: Life insurance penetration remains low in India despite government efforts and increased awareness, so converting demand from a push-based to a pull-based model is ongoing.
- Operational and IT Requirements: The bank demands digital applications usage and a paperless process for policy logging and issuance, creating operational demands for the sales force.
