Job description
Role overview
Birmingham City Council is hiring a permanent Area Caretaker to support neighbourhoods in the South Area of Birmingham. This post is at Grade B and offers a salary between £28,598 and £34,434. The role is based on a 36.5-hour working week.
The position sits within a neighbourhood caretaking team and focuses on keeping both low-rise and high-rise residential blocks well maintained, clean, safe and compliant. You will help lead a small team, monitor standards across communal spaces, and make sure issues are reported and addressed quickly.
Although knowledge of cleaning standards, shared building management and health and safety would be useful, full training will be provided.
Main focus of the role
You will supervise estate caretakers on a day-to-day basis, including carrying out one-to-ones, return-to-work meetings, identifying training needs, setting targets, undertaking risk assessments and managing performance concerns. The role also requires confidence in handling challenging conversations.
In addition, you will support environmental improvement work across housing neighbourhoods and quadrants, including fire risk assessment duties and keeping shared areas clear, sterile and unobstructed. This work covers garage sites, drying areas, access routes and other communal land managed by BCC Housing.
Key duties
- Carry out daily neighbourhood patrols to support kerb appeal and address fly-tipping.
- Complete daily block inspections and low-rise audits.
- Inspect relief rooms as required.
- Support environmental inspection and improvement activity at communal sites.
- Carry out cleansing, rubbish removal, weed clearance, overgrowth removal, and minor repairs and maintenance.
- Complete fire risk assessment responsibilities in communal areas.
- Communicate effectively with tenants, stakeholders and other relevant parties.
- Provide cover across the quadrant when staff are absent.
- Receive driver training for large vehicles such as a tipper.
Additional information
This post requires a full valid driving licence. A DBS check will be carried out. Applicants must be able to provide proof of their right to work in the UK before any offer can be confirmed, and sponsorship is not available for this position.
Internal employees and those under S118 will be prioritised and reviewed before external applicants. Flexible working will be considered, and applicants with caring responsibilities are encouraged to apply. Reasonable adjustments and accessibility support can be requested during the recruitment process.
Please note that a CV must be uploaded for shortlisting, and the mandatory Area & Neighbourhood Caretaker questionnaire must also be completed. Applications missing either of these will not be considered.
The organisation aims to advertise roles for around two weeks, but vacancies may close sooner if a large number of applications are received.
