Job Overview
The University of Southern Mississippi is seeking candidates for the role of Aquaculture Technician I, based at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory's Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center in Ocean Springs, MS. This part-time position involves technical work within recirculating aquaculture systems and requires field duties. The technician will support the cultivation and maintenance of various marine species including shellfish, finfish, and algae, assisting in broodstock management, larval husbandry, and health monitoring under the guidance of biologists or technical supervisors.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance and custodial tasks related to facilities, aquaculture tanks, water and mechanical systems, and water control structures.
- Assist in propagation and rearing activities for aquatic organisms involving sampling such as counting, sorting, measuring, and grading specimens.
- Maintain detailed records and data entry concerning monitoring parameters and production to support research or management projects.
- Engage in informational and educational outreach initiatives.
- Adhere to established standard operating procedures and undertake additional assigned tasks.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Associate degree in biology, chemistry, aquaculture, fisheries, engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution is preferred; alternatively, a high school diploma or equivalent plus one year relevant work experience is acceptable.
- A valid Driver's License is mandatory.
- Proficiency with computers and software for word processing, presentations, databases, and statistical analysis.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions, work independently or collaboratively.
- Self-motivation, resourcefulness, and proactivity are essential traits.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
- Physical capacity to lift and carry items over 30 pounds regularly.
Additional Information
This position is classified as a part-time staff role working up to 19 hours weekly without benefits and is not grant-funded. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for visa sponsorship; the University does not support work visa applications. The Marine Aquaculture Center occupies a 225-acre campus focusing on marine aquaculture research and production, featuring extensive facilities for live feeds, broodstock, hatchery, nursery, grow-out, and experimental activities.
