Job description
Role overview
This is a 12-month contract position with Canva’s Global Communications team. The role is centered on shaping how the brand is represented across Australia and New Zealand through strategic storytelling, media engagement, and internal and external communications.
Work location and style
The position is based in Sydney, and preference is for someone who is locally based there. Canva follows a hybrid working model, giving the flexibility to work from home while also spending time on campus for collaboration when needed.
What you will focus on
- Lead the communications strategy for Australia and New Zealand, setting priorities and directing how Canva appears in these markets across product, technology, corporate, and consumer narratives.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with influential journalists and editors in Australia and New Zealand so Canva stays visible and relevant.
- Adapt major global launches and campaigns for local audiences, identifying opportunities that make each initiative feel timely and market-specific.
- Run an ongoing storytelling program using earned, owned, and experiential channels to keep Canva in the public conversation throughout the year.
- Work with leaders in Australia and New Zealand to strengthen executive visibility through events, speaking opportunities, media interviews, internal messaging, and other high-profile communications.
- Support internal communications across Australia, helping keep employees informed, aligned, and engaged during key updates, milestones, and change initiatives.
What the team does
The Global Communications function helps define how Canva is understood by customers, employees, investors, regulators, and the media. The team works across many countries to turn company work into clear, consistent narratives that build reputation and support growth.
What Canva is looking for
- Substantial communications experience across Australia and New Zealand, including leading visible programs and earning coverage in major media outlets.
- Strong knowledge of the media environment in Australia and New Zealand, particularly across technology, AI, business, consumer, and culture, along with established relationships in journalism and influencer circles.
- Excellent writing and narrative-building ability across formats such as media pitches, press releases, spokesperson notes, executive statements, reactive responses, and internal updates.
- Experience working with senior leaders and public spokespeople for interviews, keynote talks, customer-facing events, and thought leadership activities.
- Confidence operating in a fast-moving setting, owning complex work end to end, and making sense of ambiguous situations.
