Job description
About the Role
Oranga Tamariki presents permanent positions for Allied Support Workers aimed at strengthening support for tamariki, rangatahi, and their whānau. These positions provide a stable, ongoing contribution located primarily at the Grey Lynn office, with occasional travel across North, West, and Central Auckland. Allied Support Workers assist frontline Social Work teams by taking on operational activities that allow Social Workers to concentrate on statutory obligations and professional tasks. This position is not a social work role, does not carry a case load, and operates under the guidance of qualified Social Workers and supervisors.
Key Responsibilities
- Delivering operational assistance regionally as required, including travel beyond local areas from time to time.
- Supporting caregiver engagement efforts through community outreach and recruitment activities.
- Organising caregiver training programs and assisting with learning and development initiatives.
- Helping with caregiver assessments, approvals, support planning, and ongoing assistance.
- Facilitating placement and matching through data collection, caregiver profile creation, and placement coordination.
- Building and maintaining good relationships with caregivers, whānau, community organisations, and internal teams.
- Being available to work occasionally outside standard business hours.
Candidate Profile
The role requires a high degree of trustworthiness and emotional resilience given the sensitivity and importance of the work with children. Candidates should bring experience and skills including:
- Prior involvement in community support roles assisting individuals in need.
- Experience working with Māori and/or Pasifika cultures.
- Capability in managing emotional circumstances empathetically.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities.
- A collaborative mindset for working effectively with peers and stakeholders.
- Professional calmness and performance in stressful, complex situations.
- Understanding of cross-cultural practices, especially tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples’ traditions.
- Confidentiality and sensitive information handling skills.
- Commitment to embodying the principles of Te Tiriti ō Waitangi in practice.
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Qualifications and Requirements
- A social services qualification is advantageous but not mandatory.
- A valid, clean full driver's licence is essential, with willingness to operate Ministry vehicles; prior convictions will be reviewed case-by-case.
Benefits and Compensation
This opportunity offers a competitive salary ranging from NZD 68,371 to 75,501 annually alongside substantial training and career development designed to support your professional growth. The organisation embraces diversity, fostering an inclusive and respectful working environment.

Applicants must adhere to Oranga Tamariki's code of conduct, which includes expectations of being free from the influence of drugs and alcohol at work.
