Role overview

The Airport Police Officer is responsible for protecting the Lubbock International Airport by patrolling airport property, enforcing laws and regulations, and supporting overall security. The position covers both FAA-secure and public areas of the airport and involves a mix of motorized and foot patrol, incident response, and public assistance.

Key duties

  • Carry out law enforcement duties across all airport property, including secure and public areas.
  • Use vehicle and foot patrols to help prevent crime, enforce regulations, and preserve airport security.
  • Handle traffic control, prisoner confinement, investigations, and dispute resolution.
  • Respond to the airport passenger screening checkpoint as required by federal law.
  • Complete safety and security inspections to support compliance with federal, state, and local rules.
  • Enforce parking and traffic rules on airport grounds.
  • Make arrests, issue citations, and prepare required reports.
  • Respond to emergencies such as civil unrest, vehicle collisions, and aircraft-related incidents.
  • Appear in court as the arresting officer, including when off duty.
  • Provide escort and guard support when necessary.
  • Assist members of the public with tasks such as unlocking vehicles, jump-starting batteries, giving directions, and offering first aid.
  • Serve as the airport management representative after regular business hours.
  • Work regularly with the public, airport tenants, and local, state, and federal law enforcement representatives.
  • At times, act as the airport’s primary point of contact.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of law enforcement experience, or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience.
  • Texas Peace Officer’s Certificate.
  • CPR certificate.
  • Texas operator’s license.
  • Physical examination required.

Knowledge and abilities

  • Understanding of law enforcement principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with standard office tools and police equipment.
  • Ability to follow department policies, laws, and regulations accurately.
  • Skill in assessing situations quickly and choosing practical responses.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for reports and interactions.
  • Capacity to learn the handling and care of small firearms.
  • Good observation skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to apprehend, restrain, and escort prisoners.
  • Ability to assist stranded motorists with basic vehicle support.

Physical requirements

This role involves regular physical activity, including lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally. The officer must be able to walk and stand continuously during a shift, climb ladders or stairs frequently, bend and kneel occasionally, and coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement to operate a vehicle.
