About the Role
This full-time, permanent position is based at the University of Huddersfield's London Campus in Stratford, Greater London. The Academic Skills Coach plays a crucial role in offering personalized academic support to students, particularly international cohorts, to help them develop effective study habits, academic literacy, critical thinking, self-management, and independent learning skills. The goal is to assist students in overcoming obstacles to academic success, thereby enhancing retention, progression, degree achievement, and employability.
Responsibilities
- Deliver individualized academic skills coaching to foster student confidence, resilience, and effective learning techniques.
- Support the development of academic literacy, including reading strategies, critical evaluation, academic writing, research, referencing, and digital skills.
- Guide students in establishing productive study routines, time management, goal setting, and self-regulation.
- Identify and address barriers to academic success by creating personalized action plans.
- Offer targeted support to students at risk of underperformance or disengagement.
- Design and conduct workshops, webinars, and group sessions on academic skill development.
- Develop accessible learning resources, instructional materials, and digital content to aid student learning.
- Collaborate with academic teams to integrate academic skills into curricula and contribute to ongoing service enhancements.
- Track student participation in academic support services and help implement initiatives aimed at improving retention and progression.
- Analyze student data and feedback for evaluation and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate with academic and student support staff—including wellbeing and careers teams—to provide comprehensive support.
- Maintain accurate records of student interactions consistent with institutional policies and procedures.
- Stay updated on best practices in academic coaching, learning development, and higher education pedagogy.
- Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion within all aspects of the role.
- Undertake other duties aligned with the position's responsibilities as needed.
About You
- Possession of an undergraduate degree or an equivalent professional credential.
- Qualifications in education, teaching, learning development, coaching, or related disciplines such as DELTA, DipTESOL, MA TESOL, MA Applied Linguistics, or PGCE.
- Postgraduate certification in Education, Coaching, Psychology, or related areas is advantageous.
- Experience working in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or similar educational settings.
- Background in higher education environments, especially working with international students.
- Familiarity with student support frameworks and services.
