Job description
About the Role
The Team Leader, National Programmes plays a key role supporting the Programme Manager in delivering building and infrastructure projects for education facilities. This position manages a small team of high achievers responsible for project delivery and oversees external project managers executing various projects. The leader is responsible for nurturing their team’s success while ensuring project goals are met.
The role requires technical expertise in buildings and infrastructure to offer mentorship, advice, and support problem-solving within the team. It also involves advising the Programme Manager with actionable insights on team performance, improvement areas, and critical data for decision-making. The position manages multiple project pipelines and delivery phases.
About You
- Proven people leadership skills focused on fostering team performance through positive reinforcement.
- Strong communication skills enabling collaboration with diverse groups.
- Experience delivering infrastructure or construction projects.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and a problem-solving mindset.
- Collaborative and enthusiastic team player.
Additional qualifications and traits include:
- At least 5 years’ experience managing high-performing teams.
- Highly organized with a talent for spotting trends and identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Certifications such as PRINCE2, MSP, or equivalent.
- Track record of supporting team members’ development and success.
- A customer-centric approach with a positive attitude towards challenges.
- Commitment to upholding Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
About the Team and Organisation
The National Programmes team is a compact, high-performing unit dedicated to improving state school facilities nationwide. This group is known for its empathetic, positive culture focused on enhancing learning environments for children. The broader School Property group manages over 2,100 primary and secondary schools across extensive lands valued at $33.5 billion, one of the largest social property portfolios in New Zealand.
The forthcoming New Zealand School Property Agency (NZSPA), to be established by November 2026, will take over responsibilities for managing and developing the school property portfolio while education policy and school growth decisions remain with the Ministry of Education.
