Position Overview

Based in Wellington, this full-time permanent role at the Ministry of Health’s Office of Radiation Safety offers an opportunity to help protect New Zealanders through scientific application, regulation, and public safety. With a midpoint salary of $82,061 (subject to experience), benefits include 4.4 weeks annual leave and a wellness allowance after 12 months of service.

Key Responsibilities

• Evaluate and process applications related to radiation licences, consents, and import/export requests, ensuring sound regulatory advice and decision-making.
• Perform inspections, investigations, and enforce compliance efforts under radiation safety laws.
• Conduct research and analysis to provide technical guidance supporting regulatory decisions and programme execution.
• Participate in enhancing regulatory procedures, developing tools, guidance materials, and frameworks.
• Establish and nurture strong relationships with regulated entities and stakeholders while upholding commitments to equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.

Candidate Profile

• Demonstrates thorough knowledge of radiation safety principles, practices, and relevant regulatory frameworks, supported by appropriate qualifications or equivalent experience.
• Skilled in applying sound judgment and critical analysis to evaluate risks, formulate options, and provide informed advice.
• Effective communication and stakeholder management capabilities, including the skill to convey complex technical information and handle sensitive discussions.
• Highly organized with excellent planning and problem-solving abilities, capable of prioritizing workload, meeting deadlines, and maintaining accuracy.
• Preparedness and eligibility to conduct inspections nationally, requiring a radiation use licence and a full New Zealand driver licence.
• Preferred qualifications include prior inspection or investigation experience, postgraduate studies in radiation physics or related disciplines, and membership in relevant professional organizations.
