Job description

Role Overview

The Student Welfare Officer (SWO) plays a crucial role in offering guidance and emotional support to students with additional needs, collaborating closely with families and community partners to overcome learning obstacles and strengthen support systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver personalized reintegration support for students experiencing long-term absenteeism or facing statutory issues.
  • Partner with the school's student support team to identify early risk factors, manage cases proactively, and prevent at-risk behaviors among students.
  • Mentor students with additional needs, enabling them to make well-informed life decisions.
  • Carry out assessments and devise intervention plans addressing the core causes of absenteeism through outreach, home visits, phone communication, and case conferences.
  • Advise on appropriate community partner services to support students’ extracurricular needs.
  • Collaborate effectively with school personnel and community organizations to coordinate comprehensive student support.
  • Escalate matters to statutory agencies promptly when a student’s safety is at risk.
  • Provide continued reintegration and transitional assistance, including mandatory programs by social service ministries and support during release from statutory institutions.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Demonstrated passion and positive attitude towards assisting students with additional needs and their families.
  • Cultural awareness, openness to diverse perspectives, and collaborative mindset.
  • Emotional resilience, resourcefulness, and stability in handling challenging scenarios.
  • Proven ability to manage complex absenteeism and statutory cases and offer consultations to school leadership.
  • Preferably a minimum of five years’ experience, with casework background in social service sectors supporting students and families being advantageous.
