Role Overview

You will join a small, fast-moving engineering team that works on difficult product and AI problems every day. The team values continuous learning, quick experimentation, and shipping high-quality product improvements through continuous deployment. Engineers are expected to build polished user experiences, design maintainable APIs and abstractions, and have broad influence on both the product and the company.

As a Machine Learning Engineer, you will help create and improve consumer-facing AI systems at the heart of Quora’s product experience. The work centers on building AI-powered content experiences, increasing user engagement, and delivering scalable machine learning solutions through hands-on model development, experimentation, and production rollout with support from cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Develop and improve user-facing AI features that use large language models and other generative AI technologies.
• Work with engineers across the AI stack, including prompt design, agent workflow tuning, and evaluation.
• Design and run experiments such as A/B tests and offline evaluations to understand effects on engagement, quality, and trust.
• Partner with product and engineering teams to turn user needs into scalable AI solutions.
• Improve model reliability by adding monitoring, safety guardrails, quality checks, and investigation of failure cases.
• Reduce latency and cost while improving the scalability of production AI systems.

Requirements

• You must be available for meetings and quick communication during Quora’s coordination hours, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pacific Time.
• You should be a 2025 or 2026 graduate, or currently pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• You need a strong grasp of the mathematical foundations behind machine learning algorithms.
• You should have experience with LLM-based applications or transformer models.
• You should know Python or C++, or be able to pick them up quickly.
• You need strong written English skills and the ability to judge tone, accuracy, clarity, and nuance in written content.
• You should be eager to learn and committed to improving both yourself and the people around you.
• Preferred: prior software engineering experience through an internship, job, or coding competition.
• Preferred: hands-on experience building production agent systems at scale.
• Preferred: interest in Quora’s mission and goals.

Location and Eligibility

This role can be done remotely from anywhere in Canada or the United States, subject to country eligibility rules. Please refer to Quora’s eligible countries information for full details.

For applicants in the U.S., the starting salary range is USD 107,360 to 152,900 plus equity and benefits. For applicants in Toronto or Vancouver, the range is CAD 137,852 to 157,061 plus equity and benefits. For applicants elsewhere in Canada, the range is CAD 128,661 to 146,590 plus equity and benefits. Starting pay depends on factors such as experience, location, education, and business needs.
