Job Overview
The Emergency Vehicle Technician is responsible for servicing and repairing a diverse range of heavy machinery and emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, ambulances, cranes, and construction equipment. This role demands comprehensive mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical expertise to maintain critical rescue and support vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct maintenance, repairs, and servicing of emergency fire vehicles and equipment such as Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) units and ambulance apparatus.
- Perform routine and complex heavy equipment maintenance tasks, including installation, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and preventive care.
- Disassemble, inspect, and replace engine and mechanical components with the aid of computerized testing tools and calibration instruments.
- Rebuild and service mobile mechanical systems, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, as well as air conditioning systems.
- Calibrate load monitoring devices ensuring safe operational lifts.
- Reconstruct hydraulic cylinders, valve systems, drivetrain units, suspensions, and related parts like springs, bushings, and kingpins.
- Swap out seals, bearings, axle brakes, and crane rigging mechanisms.
- Prepare and manage documentation including work orders, repair records, invoices, and activity reporting.
- Comply with safety protocols for hazardous waste handling and workplace safety standards.
- Execute recovery operations when required and serve as maintenance lead in absence of supervisors.
- Fulfill additional related tasks as assigned.
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Proficient in repairing, rebuilding, maintaining, and overhauling engines and assemblies related to mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems for emergency vehicles.
- Competent in diagnosing electrical and mechanical faults using electronic testing equipment.
- Advanced understanding of diesel and heavy automotive repair processes.
- Strong grasp of hydraulic theory, gearbox ratios, and mechanical pulleys.
- Ability to read and interpret technical schematics, blueprints, and diagrams.
- Familiarity with diagnostic software and capacity for technical research.
- Preferable familiarity with US military vehicles, Material Handling Equipment (MHE), OSHA regulations, ANSI, ASME codes, military standards, and OEM compliance.
Experience and Educational Requirements
- At least two years' experience servicing heavy vehicles, particularly emergency vehicles or military/tactical heavy equipment.
- Demonstrated expertise in major system repairs and maintenance.
- High school diploma or equivalent educational qualification.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Preferred: EVT Level 1 Certification related to Fire Apparatus, Ambulance, and/or ARFF technician tracks.
Physical and Work Environment Conditions
- Capability to perform physical activities such as standing, sitting, walking, stooping, squatting, crouching, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and assist in lifting up to 100 pounds.
- Work involves exposure to indoor and outdoor environments with potential presence of dust, fumes, and engine emissions.
- Work locations may be remote with challenging and uncomfortable conditions.
- Extended working hours and exposure to varying weather and hazardous situations.
- Personnel should be prepared for sudden relocations under difficult circumstances.
