Youth Worker - Wellington Region

Position Overview

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is seeking a dedicated Youth Worker to join their Greater Wellington Youth Justice team. This permanent, full-time role is based in Paraparaumu, Wellington and involves supporting tamariki and rangatahi within a non-residential youth justice setting to promote better life outcomes.

Role Purpose and Activities

The Youth Worker will actively engage with young people to help them develop skills and confidence to contribute positively to their families and communities. Responsibilities include working collaboratively with social workers and various professionals to implement care standards and achieve positive results for young people. Key duties involve:

• Supporting and spending time with rangatahi to build trusting relationships
• Participating in and organizing activities and programs to inspire youth
• Attending multi-agency meetings including Police, Education, Health, and community representatives
• Facilitating appointments, including transport where social worker presence is unnecessary
• Helping youth develop essential life skills such as budgeting and shopping
• Engaging with whānau and family group conferences
• Ensuring thorough record keeping and administrative support for the team
• Visiting homes and supporting family engagement where required

Candidate Profile and Requirements

Applicants should bring prior experience working with youth demonstrating resilience and initiative. Essential attributes and qualifications include:

• Proven ability to exercise sound judgement and manage risks effectively
• Empathy, patience, and the capability to look beyond immediate challenges
• Excellent oral and written communication skills adaptable to diverse audiences
• Keen understanding of tikanga Māori and te reo Māori
• A relevant tertiary qualification (psychology, social sciences, social work, sports, music, arts, or teaching) is desirable but not required, with equal regard to life experience
• A current, clean full New Zealand driver’s license
• Meeting requirements under the Children’s Act safety checks and vetting, including right to work in New Zealand

Compensation and Benefits

The role offers an annual salary between $57,760 and $65,334, varying by experience, with progressive annual increases based on tenure.
