Project Details

This role supports a greenfield mining, processing, material handling, and ship loading project in Weipa, Queensland, focusing on sustaining production, minimizing environmental impact, fostering community relations, and promoting local economic growth.

Job Role Summary

The Training Lead will assist in incorporating environmental, health, and safety requirements into project activities, including planning, design, construction, and operations phases. Responsibilities include providing technical guidance, managing communications, tracking performance metrics, and conducting inspections and monitoring to ensure continuous improvement of health and safety measures. The position operates on a FIFO 2:1 roster based in Weipa, with encouragement for local applicants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate diverse Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) disciplines to support Bechtel's ES&H program and management system compliance with company standards, regulations, and contractual obligations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain programs and procedures that promote employee safety, health, and environmental protection.
  • Manage ES&H databases including incident records, audits, and corrective actions.
  • Carry out statistical analysis of ES&H data to identify trends and factors contributing to incidents and recommend improvements.
  • Identify and coordinate specialized software and technological tools used by ES&H teams.
  • Prepare communications, reports, and documentation necessary for program execution and record keeping.
  • Coordinate incident notifications, lead investigations using causal analysis methods, and compile investigation reports.
  • Recommend and implement process and procedural improvements to reduce hazards.
  • Lead or support employee training, emergency readiness, and quality assurance initiatives.
  • Establish and uphold safe work practices that comply with legislative requirements, particularly in complex correctional settings.
  • Provide support to ES&H field and office personnel across all disciplines.
  • Conduct and review risk assessments such as Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and other health and safety management plans ensuring proper implementation.
  • Build strong and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree or relevant postgraduate qualification related to health and safety, or a minimum of 10 years’ experience in health and safety within major construction projects.
  • Proven experience leading incident investigations using causal analysis frameworks like ICAM or Taproot.
  • Eligibility to work in Australia and ability to pass pre-employment medical examination.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to assist construction teams in developing risk assessments and job hazard analyses.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solution-oriented approach with efficient time management to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Able to collaborate effectively in diverse team environments.
