Role overview
This position is based at Austal’s Brisbane site and is a permanent full-time role working 38 hours per week. The role sits within a global shipbuilding environment and focuses on blasting, surface preparation, and painting tasks across vessels and related parts or equipment. The aim is to complete work accurately, on schedule, to the required standard, while contributing to ongoing improvement.

Key duties
- Carry out water blasting and abrasive blasting on hulls and structural components.
- Prepare vessel hulls and structures through sanding, masking, and demasking.
- Complete filling and fairing work for ship side and hull repairs.
- Apply primer, undercoat, and topcoat across all paint systems and surfaces.
- Use airless spray equipment and pot gun spraying on vessel hulls and structures.
- Perform brush and roller painting where required.
- Act as fire watch or confined-space watch when instructed by a supervisor or manager.
- Keep the work area clean, organised, and productive.
- Assist other areas of the business when needed.
- Work in line with AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 quality management system requirements.
Requirements
- Trade qualification in abrasive blasting, industrial coatings, or a similar field.
- Hands-on experience in blasting and painting within marine or heavy industrial environments.
- Ability to carry out tasks safely and to an acceptable standard.
- Sound practical and theoretical understanding of the work.
- Current confined space and working at heights capability.
Desirable background
- Forklift licence.
- Training in first attack fire fighting.
- First aid certificate.
- Prior experience in marine ship repair or heavy industry.
