Role Overview
Join His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service at HMP Bullingdon as an Operational Support Grade (OSG) and contribute to the smooth, secure day-to-day operation of the prison. This position involves a mix of responsibilities including overseeing security checks at entry points, managing goods deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring communication systems such as phone calls and CCTV. The role balances desk duties with physically active tasks such as lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles around the prison grounds.
Key Responsibilities
OSGs handle varied duties which encompass:
- Conducting security and search operations at the prison gate.
- Managing the receipt and dispatch of deliveries.
- Supervising visitors entering and exiting the premises.
- Monitoring phone calls and CCTV systems to maintain security.
- Escorting vehicles around the prison property as required.
Candidate Requirements
- A full and valid UK driving licence with category D1 endorsement allowing driving of vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats and up to 8 meters length, plus trailers not exceeding 750kg.
- While no formal qualifications are needed, strong communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential.
- A good sense of judgement, practical common sense, and being an effective team player.
- Availability to work a variety of shifts, including nights and weekends, to maintain operational continuity.
Additional Information
Due to the rural location of certain prisons and limited public transportation options, having personal transport is advantageous though not strictly required for this role. Shift times are fixed and punctual arrival is necessary.
Benefits and Perks
- Starting salary of 29,432 per annum.
- Initial annual leave entitlement of 25 days, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service (pro-rated).
- Nine bank, public, and privilege holidays.
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Membership in the Civil Service pension scheme, plus benefits including season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Career Progression
This entry role provides valuable insight into prison operations and offers pathways to progress within the service, including the potential to transition from an OSG to a Prison Officer through a dedicated conversion scheme.
