This position reports to the Tongariro Site Manager and combines day-to-day plant operation with maintenance work to help keep generation assets running safely, dependably, and efficiently.
The role is practical and varied, and it supports the ongoing performance of one of New Zealand’s distinctive hydro schemes. It suits someone who enjoys hands-on technical work and wants to contribute to a business focused on building a better energy future for Aotearoa New Zealand.
What you will do
- Run and maintain generation plant plus associated auxiliary equipment.
- Complete planned preventive work and corrective maintenance aligned with the Asset Management Plan.
- Track plant condition, spot defects, and act to protect reliability.
- Use scheme HMI control for plant and equipment when needed.
- Keep operational logs, procedures, and plant records up to date.
- Help plan and coordinate work so tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
- Look for ways to improve plant performance and overall scheme efficiency.
What you need

- National Certificate in Electrical Supply (Hydro Operator) Level 4 is preferred, but not compulsory.
- Background in power generation, electricity distribution, or another industrial/process environment.
- Good mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving ability.
- Full, clean driver licence.
- Comfort using computers.
- Ideally, you live within a reasonable distance of the power scheme.
Training and support
If you do not already have power-generation experience, Genesis says transferable technical skills and the right mindset can still make you a strong candidate. The team will provide training and support to help you build a successful career.
Benefits
- Southern Cross medical cover, along with life, trauma, and income protection insurance.
- Discounts on electricity and gas, plus an additional 20 Power Shout hours each year.
- Up to 4% employer match on KiwiSaver contributions, or 3% through the GenSaver allowance.
- Flexible work and leave options to help balance work and personal life.
- An annual wellbeing allowance, access to Best Doctors online services for you and your family, and other wellbeing support.
