Laboratory Specialist I

Role Overview

The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is seeking a dedicated and motivated Laboratory Specialist I to oversee and coordinate operational activities supporting the Cancer Program's scientific projects. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a leading team focused on genomics, cancer biology, and drug discovery, while collaborating closely with multiple scientific and administrative teams. The institute provides a dynamic research environment interconnected with prestigious academic institutions in the Boston area.

Primary Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain comprehensive records of the Cancer Program’s laboratory equipment inventory and related events.
• Collaborate with stakeholders both internally and externally to arrange and perform equipment maintenance and repairs.
• Coordinate and carry out laboratory operations tasks including weekly health and safety inspections, scheduling routine equipment upkeep, and assisting with troubleshooting as needed.
• Liaise with the Receiving Department to manage acceptance and distribution of external lab packages, ensuring appropriate storage and prompt notification of recipients.
• Promote and uphold a strong safety culture by supporting lab managers in maintaining compliance with Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) policies.
• Identify operational gaps and support continuous improvement by helping develop and implement new policies or solutions.
• Assist lab personnel with daily operational readiness, focusing on proper use and maintenance of lab equipment.
• Respond promptly to laboratory-related service tickets and equipment alarms while keeping detailed logs of all interactions and events.
• Perform additional lab operational tasks as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor's degree (BS or BA) in a scientific discipline with no minimum experience required.
• Previous experience working within research laboratory settings and familiarity with standard operational procedures.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, appropriate for a collaborative environment.
• Basic understanding of research methods and techniques utilized in relevant laboratories.
• Highly motivated with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Demonstrates ownership, strong time management, and organizational skills.
• Creative problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach towards task completion.
• Familiarity with spreadsheet and database tools is highly desirable.
• Physical capability to perform routine equipment maintenance and other related laboratory tasks.

Additional Information

The position is based on a standard 40-hour workweek. Compensation ranges reflect good faith estimates considering skills, experience, and qualifications.
