Job description

Position Overview and Examination Details

The role involves assessing construction projects to ensure compliance with relevant codes and safety standards within the Kern County Public Works Department. Candidates will be evaluated through a written test scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2026, which covers construction trades knowledge, applicable laws, codes, regulations, and safe working practices. Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 70% to be considered.

Educational and Experience Requirements

Applicants need a High School Diploma, G.E.D., or an equivalent qualification, along with a minimum of three years' experience in related construction fields. Alternatively, a comparable mix of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and skills to fulfill job responsibilities is acceptable.

Mandatory Certifications and Licenses

  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required.
  • Within 12 months of appointment, the Building Inspector must obtain certification in one of the following categories from the International Code Council (ICC): Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, or Plumbing Inspector.
  • Alternatively, Office of State Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) Class A Certification can fulfill certification requirements.
  • Failure to acquire the necessary certification within the stipulated time will result in termination.

Application and Additional Requirements

Applicants must provide all relevant documents with their applications. Inability to attach materials digitally can be resolved by delivering them in person or via email to the Human Resources Division.

Candidates must present valid government-issued photo identification to gain admittance to the examination. For those unable, arrangements should be made in advance with Human Resources.

The hiring process includes a background check and may require post-offer medical and drug screening tests.

Selection and Employment Details
