Job Overview

The Canadian University Dubai is inviting applications for the role of Special Needs Officer within the Student Affairs Department. This pivotal position is dedicated to supporting students of determination by ensuring equitable access to academic resources and fostering an inclusive, supportive environment for learning on campus.

Role Summary

The Special Needs Officer will be responsible for enabling the academic and overall growth of students with special needs through coordination of accessibility services and personalized accommodations. Collaborating closely with students, faculty, and staff, the officer will ensure comprehensive support is provided so that students can fully engage in university life. This includes case management, advocacy, outreach, and fostering a culture of inclusion throughout the campus community.

Primary Responsibilities

• Conduct intake assessments and collect relevant documentation to identify and understand individual student needs.
• Develop and implement accommodations such as adaptive technology usage and extended examination periods.
• Serve as a primary contact and mentor for students, assisting them in managing academic and personal challenges.
• Collaborate with faculty to communicate approved accommodations, aid in their application during coursework and exams, and offer guidance on inclusive teaching methods.
• Facilitate dialogue between students and instructors to resolve accessibility concerns.
• Work with campus departments to review and enhance facility and technology accessibility, supporting the creation of inclusive policies for students of determination.
• Ensure adaptive technologies are maintained and operational through coordination with ICT and facilities management.
• Partner with the Student Success Center to secure tutoring support and with Student Life to organize awareness programs and workshops led by internal or external experts.
• Establish peer mentoring and support groups and maintain resource libraries on relevant adaptive technologies and assistance materials.
• Advocate for students’ rights and needs within the university and liaise with external organizations providing support services.
• Maintain confidential records of cases and accommodations, generate reports on usage and effectiveness, and evaluate outcomes for ongoing improvement.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• A Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, social work, or a related discipline with specialization or experience in special needs is preferred.
• At least one to two years of experience in special education or a related domain.
• Experience in higher education or academic support roles and familiarity with inclusive teaching practices is favored.
• Certification in special needs or related fields is advantageous.
