Overview
Kansas State University's Division of Biology and the Kansas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit are recruiting four full-time Research Technicians to contribute to an extensive research project focused on greater prairie-chicken ecology. The project investigates demography, spatial use, habitat preferences, response to Conservation Reserve Program lands, and the effects of prescribed fire. Positions begin as early as August 2026, with flexible start dates up to January 2027. This is an on-site role based in Manhattan, KS.
About the Employer
The Division of Biology offers undergraduate programs in Biology, Microbiology, and Fisheries, Wildlife & Conservation Biology, currently educating over 600 students. The Cooperative Unit carries out applied wildlife research statewide.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise field crews conducting research on greater prairie-chickens.
- Oversee daily operations of one to three Research Aides during field activities.
- Conduct field data collection including vegetation identification and measurement.
- Manage trapping and handling of prairie grouse safely and efficiently.
- Interact professionally with private landowners and natural resource agencies.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver’s license.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Natural Resources, Statistics, or related discipline.
- At least one year of experience in field research with prairie grouse or upland game birds.
- Proficiency in vegetation species identification and structural measurement in Kansas.
- Experience supervising field personnel.
- Competence in North American prairie grouse trapping and handling techniques.
- Familiarity with managing large data sets securely.
- Working knowledge of GIS and OnX software, including creating and maintaining spatial feature classes.
- Ability to work under challenging environmental conditions and navigate rugged terrain.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills suitable for stakeholder engagement.
- Ability to collaborate amicably within shared housing and team environments.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship required.
