About the Role
Embark on the next phase of your career in civil construction with Downer in Whanganui. As a Leading Hand within our Transport & Infrastructure division, you will play an essential leadership role by supporting the Foreman in delivering superior civil construction and drainage projects. This position requires a proactive hands-on approach to guide and coordinate crew activities while ensuring projects are executed safely, efficiently, and to exacting standards.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and organize daily operations on site ensuring smooth workflow
- Strategically plan and allocate work tasks and resources
- Provide mentorship and support to crew members actively on site
- Track productivity metrics and maintain high-quality and safety standards
- Manage efficient utilization of materials, machinery, and plant equipment
- Keep detailed site records and documentation up to date
- Foster strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and community members
- Champion a culture of Zero Harm and safety compliance among the team
- Identify and drive ongoing improvements in operational processes
Candidate Profile and Requirements
The ideal candidate should bring relevant civil contracting experience, especially in concrete works, with a keen eye for finishing and familiarity with formwork and exposed concrete. You should be a team-oriented, methodical, and positive leader who communicates effectively and adds value through your expertise. Flexibility regarding work hours and locations is an advantage.
Essential Competencies
- Current New Zealand Full Class 1 Driver Licence
- Demonstrated experience in leading or mentoring a civil construction crew
- Strong knowledge of health, safety, quality, and environmental protocols
- Excellent communication and organizational capabilities
- Ability to inspire and maintain positive team dynamics
- Dedicated work ethic and focus on delivering quality results
Preferred Qualifications
- Class 2, 4, and/or WTR endorsements
- Experience in drainage, roading, or civil infrastructure projects
- Competence in operating civil construction machinery and equipment
