Company Overview
Qatar Fabrication Company (QFAB) operates in Ras Laffan, Qatar, specializing in fabrication services for the oil and gas sector. This position prioritizes preference for Qatari nationals.
Role Overview
The Fabrication Estimation Engineer will prepare cost estimates to support bidding for high-value oil and gas projects, ensuring accuracy and completeness of bids.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and review bid and customer tender documentation thoroughly to understand scope of work, specifications, and timelines, raising queries as needed.
- Examine contract pricing formats, clarifying unit rates and lump-sum components for estimation purposes.
- Collaborate with the operations engineering team to comprehend bid strategies, sequencing, and plan methods to execute project scope.
- Request and coordinate data inputs from multiple departments including Operations, Production, Shop Engineering, Welding Engineering, QA/QC, Procurement, Planning, Yard Superintendents, and Construction Support.
- Assess the need for additional equipment and liaise with Procurement to obtain cost estimates for such resources.
- Prepare requests for quotations (RFQs) for portions of work that require subcontracting and oversee procurement of competitive bids.
- Evaluate subcontractor proposals through RFQ processes and select vendors based on cost-effectiveness.
- Conduct quantity take-offs and calculate workforce, rental equipment, and material expenses required for projects.
- Develop comprehensive cost estimates aligned with the scope using industry standards, historical data, or first principles methodologies.
- Consolidate and review overall estimates with management to ensure accuracy and approval.
- Ensure all bid estimates are fully authorized and document the basis of bids formally for reference.
- Maintain detailed records of communications, assumptions, and documentation related to bids for easy retrieval during project execution.
- Keep historical data on estimates and actual project performances for benchmarking and continuous improvement.
- Compare actual project costs against original estimates, analyze variances, and recommend updates to benchmarks where necessary.
- Lead initiatives aimed at improving estimation accuracy and bidding processes based on management input.
Qualifications and Skills
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in offshore construction projects involving structures such as jackets, topsides, and bridges, with a solid understanding of components and construction methodologies.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Competent with Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint, Excel, as well as PDF and other computer applications.
- Ability to meet strict deadlines and adapt to changing conditions both internally and externally.
Additional Information
Preference is given to Qatari nationals for this position. The role reports directly to the Operations Engineering Manager and is based in Ras Laffan, Qatar.
