About the Role
Join the Department of Conservation (DOC) as a Research Technician in a vital conservation position focused on the Critically Endangered Pukunui (Southern New Zealand Dotterel) on Rakiura Stewart Island. This largely field-based role will involve intensive work during the breeding season to support active species preservation efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct extensive field surveys to monitor the Pukunui habitats.
- Monitor birds and their nests closely throughout the breeding period.
- Install and manage nest cameras for ongoing observation.
- Collect, manage, and accurately enter ecological data.
- Summarize collected data and assist in generating reports.
- Organize and lead field excursions ensuring effective team coordination.
Skills and Experience Required
- Strong experience navigating rugged backcountry and using off-track methods.
- Proven ability to work independently in remote and exposed environments.
- Proficiency with GIS mapping tools and techniques.
- Capability in report writing and data analysis.
- Leadership experience in managing projects and guiding teams.
- Expertise in bird monitoring and handling.
- Skillful in data gathering and collation processes.
- Good physical condition to carry heavy loads in challenging terrain.
- Comfortable working with others and maintaining effective interpersonal communication.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant tertiary education qualification.
- Experience with bird handling and banding techniques.
Additional Information
This full-time, fixed-term contract runs from 21 September 2026 to 15 January 2027. While on shift, the technician will reside on Rakiura Stewart Island, operating from basic huts and campsites located in exposed sub-alpine regions. The work schedule follows a 10-days on, 4-days off rotation. When off duty, employees may stay at any location of their choosing but are responsible for their own travel expenses to and from these sites. Ferry transport between Invercargill and the island during rostered days is provided by DOC.
Compensation and Eligibility
The position offers a salary range of $65,590 to $76,589 per year, dependent on the candidate’s skills and experience. Applicants must hold a valid New Zealand work visa covering the entire employment period.
