Position Overview
Acting as a Package Handler in a warehouse setting, you will be physically responsible for loading, unloading, and sorting packages safely and efficiently. Tasks involve repeating movements such as lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing packages. Roles may rotate or be assigned to areas such as loading, unloading, palletizing, scanning, weighing, SWAK (keying), quality assurance, facing, and switching.
Specialized Roles and Training
- Package Handler Trainer: Instructs colleagues on effective methods for loading, unloading, palletizing, scanning, and moving packages to maintain operational flow and safety.
- Air Package Handler: Conducts multi-step inspections to ensure "Air Restricted" packages are not loaded on air containers, scans packages in consolidation zones, inspects hazardous materials or ORM-D designated packages, and completes restricted package return notifications.
Core Responsibilities
- Apply the "hand-surface" technique in every package handling operation.
- Load and unload packages on/ from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyors, and loading grids.
- Consistently lift, transport, push, and pull packages for approximately 3 to 5 hours per shift, possibly over multiple shifts daily.
- Determine conveyor system routing by scanning packages, reading labels and charts, verifying numbers, and memorizing details.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by management.
Additional Duties by Specialized Roles
- Package Handler Trainer: Train new employees on unloading, loading, palletizing, handling small items, SWAK, and non-transportable package methods; provide refresher training; offer feedback on proper package handling techniques; enforce safety standards; model all processes and procedures; report sorting conditions to management; support implementation of new package handling protocols; continue typical package handling duties concurrently with training responsibilities.
- Air Package Handler: Scan every package in the air transport consolidation area; inspect packages for hazardous content or ORM-D designation; load packages into unit load devices; submit return notifications for air-restricted packages; regularly perform loading/unloading and handling activities.
Qualifications
- Education: No formal education required.
- Experience: None required for general role. Specialized assignments like Trainer or Air Handler preferably require six months of prior FedEx Express Package Handler experience.
- Ability to understand and adhere to work instructions and safety protocols.
- Skill in recognizing numbers and information accurately for correct package sorting.
- Competence in using basic equipment such as roller skates, dock carts, handheld scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to thrive in a dynamic team environment.
- For roles requiring switching equipment operation, a valid driving license and Department of Transportation (DOT) driving record must be maintained.
- Trainer role requires capability to instruct multiple package handlers simultaneously.
- Air Handler must complete and maintain specialized FedEx airlift consolidation and government-regulated indirect air carrier training with annual recertification.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to hot or cold temperatures.
- Highly noisy work environment.
- Must be physically able to lift and carry between 5 and 50 pounds.
