Overview
This opportunity involves a dynamic role at the recently reopened Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct, supervising young men aged 17 and over in custody during night hours. The position emphasizes problem-solving and strong verbal communication, supported by full training including a funded Certificate IV in Youth Justice. The salary can reach up to $99,645 annually, starting from a base of $62,104 including penalty rates. Eligible candidates may qualify for a relocation allowance to assist with moving costs.
Role Details
As a night youth justice worker, you will be the frontline support for young people through overnight supervision. Instead of passive security duties, this role involves active engagement, mainly via intercom conversations. You will provide compassionate listening and firm boundaries during interactions, especially when young people express vulnerability.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform regular wellbeing checks on young individuals under supervision.
- Manage and redirect challenging or antisocial behaviors appropriately.
- Monitor surveillance systems, complete compliance documentation, and respond promptly to any alarm activations.
- Act swiftly in responding to incidents occurring within the facility.
- Coordinate and facilitate access to support services, including health, mental health, educational, and disability resources.
About You
This role is best suited to mature individuals who remain calm under pressure and have excellent listening skills. Strong interpersonal abilities to build rapport and effectively negotiate with young people are essential. The position offers the advantage of night work freeing up daytime hours for personal interests.
Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must be Australian citizens (with required identification), permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens legally able to work in Australia for more than six months.
- Success in the role requires passing a health and fitness assessment.
- Prior to commencing, candidates must independently secure valid First Aid (HLTAID011) and CPR certifications, along with a Working with Children Check (Employee), each valid for at least three months post-start date.
