Financial Controller

Role overview

The Financial Controller serves as the hotel’s primary financial steward, taking ownership of accounting oversight, fiscal control, and strategic financial guidance. Working in partnership with the General Manager and corporate leaders, this position helps protect assets, improve profitability, and ensure the property remains aligned with USALI standards and applicable local rules.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial statements, including profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow reports.
• Build financial forecasts and lead the annual budgeting cycle for all hotel departments.
• Compare actual performance against budget and forecast figures, then share clear, practical recommendations with department leaders.
• Maintain adherence to the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI).
• Design, implement, and monitor strong internal controls and procedures to safeguard hotel assets.
• Manage all audit activity, covering internal, external, and government audits.
• Ensure compliance with tax rules, licensing requirements, and financial laws at local, state, and federal levels.
• Oversee cash flow, working capital, and capital expenditure planning and management.
• Direct day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, income audit, night audit, and payroll.
• Work with Purchasing and Food & Beverage teams to control inventory, track food and beverage costs, and reduce waste.
• Lead, coach, and support the hotel’s finance and accounting team.
• Serve as a strategic advisor to the General Manager and department heads on revenue growth and cost control.
• Deliver financial performance updates to hotel owners, investors, and corporate executives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Hospitality Management, or a similar discipline.
• MBA, CPA, or CMA qualification is strongly preferred.
• At least 5 years of progressive financial management experience.
• Minimum 2 to 3 years of experience as a Financial Controller or Assistant Controller within the hospitality or hotel sector.
• Working knowledge of hospitality management systems such as Opera PMS and Micros POS.
• Advanced capability with accounting tools such as SUN Systems, Sage, or QuickBooks, along with Microsoft Excel.
• Strong analytical ability, high integrity, leadership strength, and the skill to explain complex financial information to non-finance audiences.
