Special Counsel - Public Law

Role Overview

Auckland Council seeks a seasoned Special Counsel in Public Law to join its Legal Services team on a permanent, full-time basis. Located in Central Auckland with flexible hybrid working options, this senior legal position reports to the Associate General Counsel. The role involves leading the provision of expert public law advice to Auckland Council and its council-controlled organisations (CCOs) on significant matters such as transport reform and other strategic priorities.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide authoritative legal guidance on a broad range of public law issues, ensuring compliance and facilitating Auckland Council's objectives.
• Maintain and cultivate strong relationships with key internal clients and external stakeholders including elected officials, executive leaders, Audit NZ, Ombudsman, Privacy Commissioner, and the Human Rights Commission.
• Lead and mentor members of the public law team, contributing to a collaborative, flexible, and supportive work environment.
• Deliver legal advice with autonomy and adaptability while managing complex and high-profile legal challenges.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum of 15 years legal experience, with substantial expertise in public law. Familiarity with the local government legal framework is desirable.
• Strong political and organisational insight coupled with a confident and cooperative working approach.
• Proactive, solution-oriented mindset capable of managing risk and providing strategic support.
• Exceptional relationship-building and interpersonal skills to navigate a diverse portfolio.
