Role Overview

As a Software Engineer on the AI Platform team, you will play a critical role in creating scalable, reliable systems that underpin Notion's AI product offerings. The team focuses on ensuring rapid feature deployment combined with safety, stability, and operational excellence by building and maintaining foundational AI platform components. This includes managing reliability during provider changes, building quality control systems like evaluations and release gates, enhancing observability for diagnostics, and developing shared infrastructure for model integration, context handling, and balancing performance with cost.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead prototyping, development, and scaling of core AI platform systems and primitives.
• Collaborate with product teams to provide ready-to-use paths and safeguards enabling faster AI feature deployment and reducing duplicated efforts.
• Work across infrastructure, libraries, APIs, and product interfaces to ensure AI capabilities are accessible and high-impact.
• Maintain critical AI systems in production, utilizing monitoring and diagnostics to analyze model/provider behavior, resolve issues, and optimize latency and expenses while minimizing disruption to users.
• Facilitate safe adoption of new AI models, providers, and features through versioning strategies, controlled rollout, compatibility layers, and stringent quality and reliability controls.

Required Skills and Attributes

• Strong enthusiasm for large-scale AI systems, with experience in LLM, ML platforms, data infrastructure, or owning critical shared engineering systems focused on scalability, reliability, latency, cost, and quality.
• Curious and flexible problem solver who enjoys deep exploration of system behaviors, adjusting to evolving models, providers, and product needs, and comfortable switching between backend, infrastructure, libraries, and product code.
• Demonstrated ownership over complex, ambiguous projects with accountability for outcomes including reliability, quality, adoption, and operations beyond team lines.
• Analytical mindset capable of breaking down unclear system behaviors, debugging multi-layer issues, and delivering clean, practical solutions individually or collaboratively, with readiness to seek assistance when necessary.
• Business-savvy and pragmatic, adept at balancing competing priorities such as quality, latency, cost, reliability, and speed to align with product and commercial objectives.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two to four years of software engineering experience.
• Hands-on experience developing AI products including prompt engineering, model evaluations, integrations, or quality measurement.
• Experience building and managing large-scale data pipelines using tools like Apache Spark or Ray.
• Full-stack development experience, particularly with TypeScript and the Node.js ecosystem.
• Background in MLOps and machine learning serving infrastructure.

Additional Information

This position is based in New York City (or San Francisco) with a hybrid work schedule requiring presence in office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays—days identified as Anchor Days to foster collaborative innovation.

Notion offers highly competitive compensation including salary, equity, and benefits. The estimated salary for this role is between 180000 and 201000 USD annually, dependent on location, scope, complexity, and candidate experience.
