Job description

About the Role

The Safety Officer is responsible for fostering a secure workplace environment by enforcing safety protocols, conducting regular inspections, ensuring adherence to legal safety requirements, investigating incidents, and encouraging a culture of safety throughout the plant.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and oversee the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) policies, protocols, and safety standards.
  • Carry out daily safety audits to detect unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation including the Factories Act and State Factory Rules.
  • Conduct safety induction sessions for new hires, contractors, and visitors.
  • Lead regular toolbox talks, conduct mock emergency drills, and promote safety awareness programs.
  • Investigate accidents, near misses, and incidents; suggest corrective and preventive measures.
  • Ensure proper use and compliance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across departments.
  • Manage issuance and compliance monitoring for various work permits, including Hot Work, Height Work, Confined Space, and Electrical Isolation permits.
  • Coordinate fire safety measures, emergency responses, and evacuation drills.
  • Maintain all necessary statutory registers, safety records, and EHS documentation meticulously.
  • Serve as liaison with government bodies during inspections and audits.
  • Supervise contractor safety adherence to company policies.
  • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly safety reports and management information systems (MIS).

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or degree in Engineering or Science.
  • Diploma or advanced diploma in Industrial Safety (e.g., DIS, ADIS, PGDIS, or equivalent certification).
  • Between 3 to 8 years of experience as a Safety Officer in manufacturing, distillery, bottling, FMCG, chemical, or process industries.

Required Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of industrial safety standards and statutory requirements.
  • Strong understanding of fire safety protocols, risk management, and emergency preparedness.
  • Competency in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Effective communication and training delivery capabilities.
  • Proficient in MS Office and safety report documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-departmental teams.

Performance Indicators

  • Achieve zero Lost Time Injuries (LTI).
  • Lower the occurrence of unsafe acts and conditions.
  • Maintain 100% compliance with statutory safety regulations.
  • Ensure timely resolution of identified safety observations.
  • Complete required safety training as scheduled annually.
  • Successfully pass both internal and external safety audits.
