Position Overview

The Department of Conservation (DOC) seeks a dedicated Regional Planner to lead the development and implementation of integrated regional plans focusing on biodiversity, heritage, visitor engagement, Treaty, and community priorities across the Hauraki-Waikato-Taranaki region. This role requires a strategic and practical approach to synchronize biodiversity conservation efforts with wider organizational goals to achieve impactful outcomes for the environment, Te Taiao.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the creation of cohesive regional plans aligning with departmental strategies and direction.
• Assist district teams in crafting district plans consistent with regional and national conservation mandates.
• Offer specialized functional advice primarily centered on biodiversity while integrating visitor, heritage, Tiriti, and community considerations.
• Employ a solution-oriented mindset to tackle complex challenges effectively.
• Provide ongoing support and guidance to district operations and regional leadership to prioritize organizational goals.
• Oversee performance monitoring and assurance to track progress against established targets.
• Analyze operational trends within regional reports and propose actionable enhancements.
• Champion initiatives to promote improved conservation outcomes, Treaty obligations, training, skill development, and cultural work on a regional scale.
• Facilitate regional support which may involve some travel; this is not a field delivery or regulatory planning role.

Required Skills and Experience

• Demonstrated experience in planning and driving performance improvement initiatives.
• Profound understanding of conservation management frameworks and national strategies with an emphasis on biodiversity objectives.
• Collaborative and adaptable approach suited for dynamic and fast-paced environments.
• Competency in business planning, financial management tools, and performance data reporting.
• Strong oral and written communication abilities, capable of synthesizing data insights and producing clear reports.
• Proven track record in long-term outcome planning and consultative operational implementation.
• Awareness of Treaty Settlement processes and implementation contexts.
• Pragmatic problem-solving skills complemented by initiative and independence.

Additional Information

This permanent, full-time position is based in Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand. Though primarily office-based, the role may require occasional travel within the wider region. The position emphasizes strategic work planning supporting quality-focused conservation efforts rather than direct fieldwork or regulatory consent planning.

Salary range: NZD 80,054 - 101,142 annually, adjusted according to skills and experience.
